Helping white storks to nest successfully

In the framework of a volunteer programme, the staff of the Bükk National Park Directorate again carried out grassland management work on the Sulymos plateau in Tiszadorogma. Within the framework of the Grassland-HU LIFE integrated project mowing was carried out in areas that couldn't be reached by machines and the previously cut false indigo-bush was collected, the Bükk National Park Directorate said.

The participants used the collected twigs to make stork nest bases to help the white storks returning to the South Borsodi Regional Unit of the BNPDto nest successfully. The finished nest bases will later be placed on support stands to help the birds breed safely on the power poles. The electricity company's technicians remove the nests without supports up to mid-March and then replace them with nest supports with nest trays. This is an attempt to encourage the storks to choose these poles for nesting rather than those that are not properly protected.

About the area in question it is important to know that this is a wetland meadow, one of the last wet grasslands in the area, located on the outskirts of Tiszadorogma, next to the Sulymos canal, which was built to drain the waters of the plain. It is surrounded by large areas of arable lands and its conservation is therefore a priority. Wet grasslands provide habitat for a number of protected species of flora and fauna of special importance.
